A quiet, restorative experience

Settle in. Let yourself receive.

You’ll lie comfortably beneath seven suspended quartz crystals, each aligned with one of the primary chakra centers. The room gets quiet, and colored light begins to move through the crystals—sometimes gradually, sometimes one center at a time, sometimes as the full spectrum.

Close your eyes. Follow your breath. Meditate if you like. Or do absolutely nothing.

Some people sink into deep relaxation. Others notice color, imagery, warmth, emotion, or simply a quieter mind. And sometimes the best part is just having permission to stop for a while.

There is no “right” way to experience it. The point is simply to become quiet enough to notice what is happening for you.

Sometimes the most restorative thing we can do is give the senses less to process.

Light · Color · Perception

Light has always shaped life.

Morning light helps orient us toward wakefulness. Darkness prepares us for rest. Plants grow toward light. Seasons change with it.

Within the visible spectrum, different wavelengths are perceived as different colors. In physics, those differences can be measured in wavelength and frequency.

Ayurveda asks a different kind of question: How does the quality of what we take in through the senses affect the way we feel?

The physics of visible light

Visible light is a narrow portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. Different wavelengths correspond to different frequencies and are perceived as different colors—from longer-wavelength red through shorter-wavelength violet. The ranges shown in our color map are approximate reference bands; the boundaries between colors are gradients, not hard lines.

We keep that measurable description distinct from Ayurvedic and yogic color correspondences. They can be placed in conversation without pretending they are the same system.

An Ayurvedic science of the senses

In Ayurveda, this is Ranga Chikitsa.

Ranga means color. Chikitsa means therapy or treatment. In Ayurveda, color therapy sits within the broader practice of Tanmatra Chikitsa—working intentionally with what we take in through the five senses.

  • Sound
  • Touch
  • Sight
  • Taste
  • Smell

Color works through Rūpa—the sense of sight and form. Ayurveda recognizes that what we repeatedly take in through the senses affects the environment our body and mind are responding to all day long.

Ranga Chikitsa, Tanmatra Chikitsa & Rūpa

Ayurveda has always looked beyond food and herbs. The qualities of our sensory environment matter too: loud or quiet, rough or soft, bright or dim, stimulating or settling. Ranga Chikitsa applies that same way of thinking to color.

In Ayurveda, color is understood as a prāṇic expression perceived through sight and interpreted in relationship to consciousness, chakra, doṣa, and guṇa.

Five-sense therapy Tanmatra Chikitsa Ayurveda works through the sensory pathways as part of a larger therapeutic framework.
Sight / form Rūpa Color is perceived through the visual sense: the tanmatra associated with form and sight.
Color therapy Ranga Chikitsa The traditional use of color within an Ayurvedic reading of chakra, dosha, guna and prāṇa.

Ayurveda doesn’t treat any one color as universally beneficial. It asks: What qualities are present now, and what would help bring the system back toward balance?

A different quality of input

Sometimes what we need most is less stimulation.

Modern life gives the senses a lot to process. A Ranga Chikitsa session creates a very different environment: quiet, stillness, breath, intentional color, and far less demand on your attention.

01

Deep Rest

A protected stretch of time with nowhere else to be and nothing you need to accomplish.

02

Decompression

A quieter sensory environment after busy, intense, or overstimulating days.

03

Meditation

A simple way to settle inward without forcing the mind to be quiet.

04

Grounding

Time to bring your attention out of the noise and back into your body.

05

Clarity

Space to notice what becomes clearer when things get quiet.

06

Energetic Exploration

For those who already work with yoga, chakras, prāṇa, meditation, or subtle-body practices.

You don’t need a problem to come in. Curiosity, the need for rest, or the desire to feel more settled are reason enough.

Close detail of a precision-faceted clear quartz Vogel-style crystal

Quartz · Geometry · Light

Light through crystal.

Colored light is projected through seven precision-faceted clear quartz crystals, positioned above the seven primary chakra centers.

Their geometry is inspired by the work of Marcel Vogel, a longtime IBM researcher whose later work explored quartz, light, geometry, intention, and consciousness.

The result is visually simple and striking: each field of color passes through faceted quartz before reaching the body.

light → color → crystal → body

Why quartz? Explore the Vogel connection

Vogel spent 27 years at IBM before turning much of his attention to quartz crystal. His later work explored how faceting, geometry, meditation, and focused intention might interact with crystal. The crystals used in this system draw from that design tradition.

Guided with intention

You don’t have to choose your own color.

Before we begin, we check in. How are you feeling today? Are you looking for rest, grounding, clarity, meditation, a particular energetic focus—or simply the experience of the full spectrum?

Root to Crown

A gentle progression through the centers from grounding toward greater subtlety.

•••

Sequential

Each color or center is experienced distinctly before the spectrum comes together.

Full Spectrum

All seven colors may be experienced together when that quality is appropriate.

Focused

A particular color or energetic center may receive more attention when indicated.

We choose the sequence based on your intention, how you’re feeling that day, and the amount of stimulation that feels appropriate.

Ayurveda is the foundation

Context matters.

At Hale Veda, Ranga Chikitsa is part of a larger Ayurvedic practice. We are a clinic and school first, so we approach color the same way we approach any other therapy: in context.

Our work is grounded in classical Ayurveda, clinical practice, teaching, bodywork, yoga, and meditation. We look at color alongside doṣa, guṇa, prāṇa, Agni, the senses, daily rhythm, and individual constitution—not as an isolated technique.

Cory Tixier is a NAMA-Certified Ayurvedic Doctor, educator, clinician, and former faculty member and clinical supervisor at The Ayurvedic Institute. Her work has included extensive Panchakarma training and teaching in the lineage of Dr. Vasant Lad.

The Hale Veda approach

Ayurveda asks us to look at the whole person.

The question is: What is appropriate here, now, for this person?

That changes the way we use color. A stimulating color can be helpful in one context and simply too much in another. A cooling color may feel deeply settling for one person and too dispersing for someone else.

At Hale Veda, we start with the person—not the protocol.

Questions

A few things people often ask.

Is Ranga Chikitsa the same as red light therapy?

No. Red and near-infrared photobiomodulation are distinct modalities that use specific wavelengths and treatment parameters. Ranga Chikitsa works with the visible color spectrum within an Ayurvedic and chakra-based framework.

Is this also called chromotherapy or color therapy?

Yes. Chromotherapy and color therapy are common contemporary terms. We use Ranga Chikitsa because it places the practice within its Ayurvedic context.

Do I need to believe in chakras?

No. You may experience the session through the language of Ayurveda, yoga, meditation, sensory therapy, energy work—or simply relaxation. Curiosity is enough.

What might I feel during a session?

Everyone is different. Some people become deeply relaxed or sleepy; others feel clear, grounded, spacious, contemplative, emotional, energized, or unusually aware of different areas of the body. There is nothing you are supposed to feel.

Should I choose 30 or 45 minutes?

Choose 30 minutes for a shorter introduction or restorative pause. Choose 45 minutes if you want the fuller experience and more time to settle. If you are new and want the complete Hale Veda experience, we recommend the 45-minute Signature Session.

Do I remain clothed?

Yes. Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to rest easily. You remain fully clothed throughout the session.

How is my light sequence selected?

We begin with a short check-in and choose a sequence according to the intention, duration, and how you are arriving that day. The system can move gently from Root to Crown, work sequentially, use the complete spectrum, or emphasize one area when focused work is appropriate.

Who should speak with you before booking?

If you have an implanted electronic medical device, have recently undergone major surgery, are receiving significant active medical treatment, or have another concern about whether the session is appropriate, please contact Hale Veda before booking.

Can Ranga Chikitsa replace medical care?

No. Ranga Chikitsa is offered as a complementary Ayurvedic wellness and contemplative practice. It is not a substitute for medical diagnosis, emergency care, medication, psychotherapy, or treatment from an appropriately licensed healthcare provider.
